TeddyNUC – Power Supply for Intel NUC (Roon Rock, Roon Nucleus and NucleusPlus etc)

$505

The TeddyNUC is an ultra low noise power supply that can be used to replace the switching power adaptor that comes with media-PCs such as Intel NUC, Roon Nucleus, SonicTransporter etc. The TeddyNUC provides significant improvement in sound quality, resulting from a reduced noise-floor.
The design is based on the experience gained with the TeddyCap family of power supplies for Naim Audio equipment, and uses the same technology.
Specifications are 19V DC, with up to 3.5A output current.

Details

The TeddyNUC is an ultra low noise 19V/3.5A Linear Power Supply that can be used to replace the switching power adaptor that comes with media-PCs such as Intel NUC, Roon Nucleus, Asrock Beebox etc.

Compatibility

  • All generations of Intel NUC, with CPU TDP up to 65W, this means i3/i5/i7 CPUs.
  • Roon Nucleus, Nucleus+, all versions.
  • Innuos Zen Mini - all versions.
  • Asrock Beebox (S version only with i3/5).
  • Small Green Computer Sonictransporter - all versions with CPU TDP up to 65W. Please note: Sonictransporter i9 is not supported.

Sound

In general, you’ll experience more clarity, tighter bass, more detail, better dynamics, natural voices, better soundstage etc.

Performance

The power supply which is provided with media-PCs is based on a technology called Switch Mode. Using this technology it is possible to create small, efficient, and low cost power supplies. Unfortunately due to their method of operation (high frequency capacitor charging), these power supplies are also very noisy, causing degradation in sound quality. As an alternative, several after market power supplies exist which are usually based on Linear Regulators. These regulators provides an improvement over the original power supply but as can be seen on the graph below are still limited in their performance.

The TeddyNUC power supply is based on the zero-feedback, ultra low noise voltage-regulator called SuperTeddyReg and provides a significant improvement over conventional feedback-based linear regulators.

The following graph shows the noise level measurements of the original wall wart power supply (red line), an alternative power supply based on a Liner Regulator (blue line), and the TeddyNUC power supply (black line). The brown line is a zero Volt reference which is actually the measurement equipment internal noise. As can be seen the TeddyNUC power supply noise level is very close to the zero Volt reference.

  1. Here, it says $505.00 CAD, it is $770.50 CAD, the 550 is USD. This was clear wen I purchased, I paid the price I was expecting. For the performance, I would put 6 stars over 5, much more than expected, it is very well designed and specially the performance, I work in instrumentation, and I have a good experience and knowledge in electronics, but, in sound performance, you have to try, then explain, because, it simply doesn’t make sense that a digital processing would improve so much with a better power supply, in fact, it does, even when I listen to wireless speakers. I think the streaming part in more important and touchy then I tough (Maybe the clock is more precise with a more stable power supply???), This said, I don’t know if another power supply could perform as well or better, but this one for sure worth every penny of it. The difference is not only subtle but obvious Amazing. The device I use is a
    Nucleus Plus.

  2. Must have for a Roon Nucleus!

  3. Had to pay a lot of fees with DHL like around $90. Didn’t like it at all! The power supply is good. Steph

  4. While the device itself is working fine, the shipping experience was not so good. I requested “no signature required” yet one was. The device was also poorly packaged and the case was damaged in transit. Their shipping department needs some help.
